Professor Neritan Ceka, an 85-year-old passionate archaeologist, remains dedicated to his life’s work and has no intention of slowing down. He is currently focusing on various projects, notably in the Archaeological Park of Butrint and the often-overlooked archaeological park of Lezha, which he believes is integral to the Albanian national identity.
Reflecting on his birthday, Ceka expressed, “I believe I will never stop; this milestone reminds me that I still have work to do until our efforts gain the respect of the Albanian public.” He emphasized ongoing initiatives, including a European Union project starting this year focused on Bylisi, and his longstanding commitment to Selca, where he previously worked in the 1970s. Ceka views Lezha as a key objective, aspiring to transform it into a dignified archaeological park, shedding light on its importance.
While he acknowledges the need for more investment in Albanian archaeology, Ceka remains optimistic due to the increasing public interest in archaeological sites. “The fact that these sites are crowded with people encourages us and compels us to stay dedicated to this work,” he stated.
In celebration of Ceka’s 85th birthday, a special event was held at the Academy of Sciences, honoring his contributions alongside family, friends, and colleagues. His peers praised him as a prominent representative of the second generation of Albanian archaeologists, highlighting his role in elevating the field and contributing to various archaeological disciplines.
Ceka’s critical and interdisciplinary approach to archaeology has made him a reference point for Albanian history over his six-decade career. He began this journey alongside his father, the renowned archaeologist Hasan Ceka, and is now passing his passion for archaeology to his daughter, who is following in his footsteps.
The professor’s enduring commitment, groundbreaking projects, and the encouragement from a thriving public interest signify his vital role in preserving and promoting Albania’s archaeological heritage. As he reflects on his career, Ceka’s dedication to uncovering and respecting the past remains unwavering, ensuring that his work will continue to inspire future generations.
